No Tabletop Tuesday this week

I'm dealing with some personal stuff and trying to take a chunk out of the work I need to do for my dissertation, so there is no Tabletop Tuesday post for this week.  I thought about phoning it in with a post about my DM materials or something, but ultimately I decided that time would be better spent on something else.

I hope everyone is having a good week so far.  Be sure to check back next week - October is going to be all about zombie games!

Tabletop Tuesday! Starting the Fall TV Season with a Big Bang!

Hello and welcome back to Tabletop Tuesday, my weekly blog post about tabletop games! Last week we transitioned out of a summer full of tabletop RPGs by playing a card game inspired by D&D and other fantasy tabletop RPGs: Munchkin.

This week we switched gears and got back to board games! Last night was the 9th season premiere of The Big Bang Theory, so we got some take-out and played The Big Bang Theory Trivia Party Game!

The Big Bang Theory Trivia Party Game (BBTTPG) is made by Cardinal Industries Inc. Designed for 2-7 players, this game puts a "spin" on Trivial Pursuit style trivia games. Hit the jump to learn more!

#Fandom5: Five Things I Love About Autumn! Sept. 18, 2015

Happy Friday everyone, and a Happy (early) International Talk Like a Pirate Day! (it's tomorrow, ye scurvy dogs!)

#Fandom5, or 5 Fandom Friday is a weekly blog link-up and the creation of Kristin at Super Space Chick and Megan at The Nerdy Girlie.  It's a lot of fun and a great way to find new blogs! Go here to learn more about it or follow #Fandom5 on Twitter!

Today's 5 Fandom Friday topic is: Five Things I Love About Autumn!

Autumn is my favorite season! There's just something about the air, the crisp mornings, the dark, deep night sky. It's easy to rattle off a long list of everything I enjoy about autumn... because I love practically everything about this season!

1. Seasonal foods
Hearty, well-seasoned, and colorful. Rich stews, meat pies, baked squash, pumpkin spice, apple cider - I love them all! I like to make cottage pie, pasties, onion soup, beef stew, and apple pastries. I'm already planning my Halloween feast - roasted pork tenderloin with cider sauce, mashed butternut squash, potatoes, and green beans or sprouts!

2. Cool-weather clothes
I finally found a pair of knee-high boots that fit my calves, and I've been waiting for 2 months for the weather to cool so I can wear them! I also love wearing sweaters and scarves, and layering tights and skirts.

3. The changing landscape
I love the cooling weather, crisp mornings, and autumn rains. And I love the changing leaves. I live in upstate New York, and in my part of the region we usually get our best leaves in early to mid-October.

4. Spooky and supernatural
On All Hallow's Eve, or Samhain, the veil to the afterlife is brushed aside and the spirits of the dead roam the earth. That is the foundation for many Euro-American harvest and Halloween traditions, as the night's grow longer, the sun dies, and we wait for its rebirth on the winter solstice. It's not hard to understand why our ancestors developed these sorts of beliefs if you've ever taken a late autumn walk through the forest or under the night sky.

Ever since I was a little kid, I've loved spooky stories and learning about the history of witches and supernatural beliefs. I think part of me has always wanted to live in the woods like a witch... and Halloween is my most favorite holiday!

5. Playing in the leaves with Stormageddon!
Stormie loves chasing leaves, whether they're being blown around by a breeze, or kicked up by me! Then we come inside and snuggle, and he smells like the outside.

Tabletop Tuesday! Munchkin

Welcome back to another Tabletop Tuesday!!! This summer, my Tabletop Tuesday posts were really heavy on the tabletop RPG - D&D and Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG, specifically. So, to ease out of the RPGs and back into board games, today's post is about... Munchkin!

Munchkin is a card game that "brings you the essence of the dungeon-crawling experience... without all the messy roleplaying!" (source: rule book) It is made by Steve Jackson Games.

Basically, Munchkin is a card game inspired by tabletop RPGs like D&D... but without the roleplaying, backstory, DM, excessive dice rolling, or time commitment. Hit the jump to read more!

#Fandom5: Five Broadway roles I'd love to play! Sept. 11, 2015

Happy Friday!!! I hope everyone had a good week. Mine was surprisingly busy - I gave a guest lecture in a friend's class (yay! Pad that CV!), wrote and submitted an abstract for a conference this spring, played tabletop games, and continued the yard work we started last weekend.

Today's 5 Fandom Friday topic is: Five Broadway roles I'd love to play!

I grew up watching musicals, taking tap dancing lessons, and performing in the chorus of my high school's spring musicals, so it's no wonder that I love musicals and show tunes!

1. Peggy Sawyer, 42nd Street
42nd Street has a special place in my heart. It's a dancer's musical, and I danced to We're in the Money for my very first tap recital.

2. Eliza Doolittle, My Fair Lady
I love this musical. My family went to see a stage production on our first trip to London back in 2002 and it was loverly.

3. Millie Dillmount, Thoroughly Modern Millie
This one I've actually seen on Broadway! This is a tap dancing musical if ever there was one - they even have to tap dance to get the elevator to work!

4. Arthur's faithful servant Patsy, Spamalot
I love Monty Python and dragged some friends to see this one in London back in 2007. We had discount student seats in the nosebleed section, but it was still amazing and hilarious. Every single role looks like it would be a blast to play!

5. Kate Monster, Avenue Q
I love this show. It's like Sesame Street with adult themes.

Tabletop Tuesday! D&D, Speed Dating Style

Greetings and welcome to another Tabletop Tuesday! I have a fun post topic for today: what happens when you combine the idea behind speed dating with tabletop gaming!

My favorite DM organized a mixer for the D&D players at our local comic store. Since this past spring, Wednesday night D&D has really grown in popularity at the store. There are currently four regular Adventurers League groups, each with between 4 and 7 players. This mixer let us break away from our usual groups and play with a bunch of different people and DMs.

A mixer like this is a great way for a store (or library, or rec center) to drum up interest in D&D and get some new players involved. Hit the jump to read more about this event!

#Fandom5: Five deaths that broke my heart, Sept. 4, 2015

Hi everyone! Happy Force Friday!!! And happy birthday to my amazing little sister!

Today's topic is so sad! It's: Five deaths that broke our hearts.

This was a hard one to write. Too many feelings. I'm going to go play with my dog now...

Warning: Spoiler alert for the Abhorsen book trilogy, because even though the books have been out for 10+ years, they're not super well-known (as far as I know) and don't have movie adaptations. I also reference the Harry Potter books, the Serenity movie, and Futurama, in case there's anyone who needs a spoiler warning for those.
